Work to Residence

This is a hybrid of temporary policy and residence policy in certain occupational areas or for certain approved employers (for positions commanding New Zealand $50,000 or more only). A work permit for 2 years will be issued culminating in residence (a residence application is filed at the end of the 2 year period). There is no English language requirement.

There are 3 categories:

  1. Talent (arts, culture and sports)
  2. Talent (accredited employers - $50,000 or more)
  3. Long Term Skill Shortage List

For a further or full appraisal and confirmation please complete an appraisal form.

1. Talent (arts, culture and sports)

Applicants must be under 55 and meet health and character requirements. They must have an international reputation and record of excellence in their declared field and their presence in New Zealand must enhance the quality of New Zealand’s accomplishments and participation in the declared field of art, culture or sport. The application must be sponsored by a New Zealand organisation of national repute.

2. Talent (accredited employers)

Applicants must be under 55 years of age.

The first process is that an employer must first be accredited. Only existing companies who are employment and immigration law compliant should apply. Intending employees who have an interested employer are best advised to recommend that the employer approach an immigration specialist for assistance with the accreditation application. There are a number of pitfalls and documentary requirements. Once the company is accredited it can renew its accreditation every 12 months and it can sponsor more than one worker. The employee can, once granted a work permit, transfer from one accredited employer to another, but must work for a period of at least 24 months full time in order to achieve residence.

3. Long Term Skill Shortage List

Persons with a job offer in shortage areas listed below and who do not meet enough points under the Skilled Migrant Category can apply for a work to residence permit. The Long Term Skill Shortages List changes from time to time but they include various occupations in the following areas:

  • Health
  • IT (Information Technology)
  • Automotive mechanics (petrol and diesel)
  • Electricians

Please note that the number of specialist areas in IT and health is extensive. Nurses and doctors in almost every area and information technology professionals in a number of areas will qualify. Applicants  need to be 55 or under at the residence stage.

For a further or full appraisal and confirmation please complete an appraisal form. If you will turn 56 before you are elligible to apply for residence please obtain a legal opinion before embarking on the project.
